From Scotland to Taiwan: Exploring Cultural and Linguistic Connections

Lauren (Bai Luwen) is a young lady from Scotland who majored in Chinese and French at Newcastle University. During her Chinese studies, she developed a strong interest in Chinese culture. Despite being in an English-speaking environment, her Chinese proficiency has reached an impressive level.

A few months ago, she came to Taiwan to work as an English teacher, finally getting the opportunity to immerse herself in a Chinese-speaking environment and learn more about the culture firsthand. In Taiwan, she discovered the differences between mainland Chinese and Taiwanese expressions. Interestingly, many Taiwanese people assumed she was American.

Although Scotland is part of the UK, Lauren often introduces herself as Scottish rather than British, reflecting her strong identification with her Scottish cultural background.

For Stacy, her teacher, it’s a joy to teach such a dedicated student. Discussing their upbringing and cultural backgrounds with students from different countries is one of the most enjoyable aspects of teaching Chinese.
